"Take Me Home"

“Take Me Home”

"Take me home", "I want to go home"; is an association of words constructed with some deliberation that perhaps not many people will recognise, unless they have or are in a special situation and such  words often repeated to listeners can have double meaning, one meaning may  come from a group of people that for a number of reasons repeat the phrase as an echo raised from a memory of time past and is, it seems, hard wired to the exclusion of more recent memories or memories that are fading due to short term memory loss. It is hard to hear the phrase when it comes from a dearest of long relationship as it seems to unreasonably preclude things of the near present. The call is for a home that may no longer exist and even within a limited scope of explanation, does not satisfy the person asking the question as to why they cannot go home. It can be frustrating and disheartening to hear the plea, as it seems irrational and maybe excusable within the predicament that the demand is made, never minding that it is a request that cannot be filled by those hearing the words. The request is heartfelt and although not initially understood, may come from a person in a dire situation and moving towards death.

It is incredible difficult, painful and frustrating to be helpless in such a situation of seeing suffering stressed dying, the uncertainty of the timing, the slipping away of the person, the provision of comfort and care makes the phrase much harder accept yet it is all one can do to be available and assist and is unfathomable why prolonged discomfort is suffered.  However there is another way of looking at the intent inherent in the phrase.

In some cultures that take a esoteric view of life and the energy that pervades life, the source of that energy is derived from the universe or spirit or god, not that a hard bitten agnostic would consider such a point but never the less something is present in the human form seems to lean even minimally towards the desire for something ‘other’ at times of stress, stress / upset that might be  expressed in tears, something that so far as one can tell, no other earth creature is capable of doing. From this holistic view, people in these cultures that have a generous expansive hold on the process of life and death have adopted a saying which is used when a person dies – ‘they have gone home’, used as a way of indicating that the soul / spirit has returned to the provider source and it seems not to matter if one does not believe in an afterlife or god in heaven but the person making the request has a right to be respected in the use of the phrase and what harm can it be to just believe that their requests is their last desire and accept this alternative meaning.

It may be a dream to have a conversation with a dear one, not really understanding the actual meaning of the conversation but knowing that it means something is important. The images that are presented are what may be recalled and something that has meaning will be what gives weight to the dream. So give me the royal wave before you go.

She has gone home.
